Marcelo Nami
‘Marcelo Nami, to me, is simply phenomenal. I’d even say that he’s unbelievable’, declares Samba Maestro Alceu Maia. ‘Yes’, he continues, ‘that was the impression I got when I first heard him play: incredible. Music flows in his soul with the tenderness of angels strumming their lyres. His songs show sublime inspiration and are technically perfect. I’ll say - and there’s no doubt about it - that he’s the definitive musician and one of the best in the world’.
Born in a small town in the Paraíba Valley, south of Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian composer and guitarist Marcelo Nami, who now lives in Israel, started to delight audiences performing Bach, Ernesto Nazareth and Villa-Lobos at the tender age of 7. Over thirty-five years, many round-the-world concerts and three successful albums later, Nami’s musical freshness and originality are at full steam. Tracks such as ‘After Carnival’ (from his first album, Wind Toy, recorded in Brazil in 2011), ‘Into Heaven’ and ‘Liberdade’ (from the second one, solo-guitar Back Again, Israel, 2014) or the poignant ‘Eilat’ (third album, New Day, Brazil-Israel-Venezuela, 2018) render concertgoers really touched.
Marcelo Nami has performed around the world and played both live and at studios with Brazilian and international stars like Jaques Morelenbaum, Gabriel Grossi, David Broza, Alon Oleartchik and Yoni Rechter, and he has also taken part in many festivals such as Eilat’s Red Sea Jazz, Acre, Tel Aviv’s Spring Jazz, Barquisimeto and San Louis Jazz. A teacher at renowned Rimon Music School, Marcelo Nami is currently preparing his fourth album.
Another master, the great Venezuelan cuatrista Jorge Glem, says: ‘When I met Marcelo, I realized right away that, besides being a great musician, he's also somebody who shines his light with his notes and his mastery. He's the perfect combination of skill and soul.’
